American Girls - The Groovy 1970s

Today, our American Girls Club met and learned about the 1970s. Ms. Sloggett showed a slide show of things that were popular during the 1970s. The girls learned about hairstyles, clothing styles, technology of the time, and listened to a few songs from the 1970s. They made friendship bracelets and got to see some funny pictures of Ms. Sloggett and her family from that time. Here's one of the pictures they saw - it is from 1972. That is Ms. Sloggett on the top right!

More New Books!

Central Oak boys and girls are going to go BONKERS when they see the new books that Mr. Roger Short, CO alumni purchased for our library! Tom Angleberger has written some very creative books for upper elementary and middle school students about a bunch of kids who know a lot about Star Wars. One of the boys creates origami characters from Star Wars and they play an integral role in the plot of the series.

Felicity is an American Girl who lives in Jamestown during the late 1700s. Since the 5th graders are studying that time period, I thought it would be nice if the girls could read about a girl their age that lived during the time.

Outstanding Alumni Support

Our library received a wonderful donation from a couple of alumni this afternoon - the entire series of two of our most popular books and two American Girl - Felicity books! Thank you so much!!!

American Girl Seamstresses

Our American Girl club met today to learn how to do some simple sewing. Only two of the dozen or so students who came had ever sewn on a button or done any sewing at all. It was a learning experience to be sure!

I taught them how to sew a button onto a piece of felt, tie knots at the end of thread, and how to do a simple running stitch. Luckily, Mrs. Tinney was there to help us all out!

The kids were so happy with their results and wanted to know if they could take needles and thread and extra fabric home to make another pillow or sachet.

We discussed the American Girls in the books they have read that had to sew their own clothes. They all agreed that it was so much easier to buy clothes at the store rather than to make them!

We can't wait until next month to have our American Girl Tea Party!

American Girl Valentines

I found this quote on my Pinterest board today. Boy, does it ever say what I am thinking every single day! So many things happen each minute of my day here in the library. Kids, teachers, and other staff members come and go all day and something is happening all around the school each second! Today, being Valentine's Day, we have parties in the classrooms, a program being presented by the fourth grade classes, and I finally hosted the first of our monthly American Girl activities.

The girls talked about why they liked reading the series they had chosen to read and they all surmised that it was because they identified with the American Girls in some way or another.

We made Valentines for teachers and staff in our building who might not otherwise receive V-day cards, including the custodians and specials teachers. It was so much fun! The girls can't wait to come back next month!
